111.                Joan Flemmer

          President

          Alberta Collision Avoidance

To the administration of the University of Saskatchewan

It has recently come to my attention that a number of female assaults have occurred on University grounds. It is also my understanding that future strategies to ensure the safety of students on university property are not being considered at this time. If my understanding is correct, and I am hoping that it is not then I would like to put forth my concerns about this lack of course of action.

First, simply from a liability stance, non-action on this issue puts the University at serious risk of litigation, not to mention the remorse of responsible administration would have if future attacks occur.

Second, a reputation is everything to a University, is the reputation you want, one, which has a policy of non-interference? University is a place of learning and a place of safety to learn. If I am already reading about these events through email, where is your reputation headed? Remember the SARS outbreak and China? They tried to hide their problem as well, what happened to them?  I tell you, International disgust and concern.

Third, this is problem that is not isolated. Female assaults, date rapes and abuse are concerns at every major university. It is time for a university to be a leader and move forward with proactive strategies to combat this common concern, including starting a national discussion. The point is that this problem in not to be ignored and hidden but to brought out through national debate.

I hope that this discourse and the petition that I am now about to sign will prompt you into responsible action.

Yours educationally, Joan Flemmer

          President

          Alberta Collision Avoidance

Ashley Miller - Hello,  My name is Ashley Miller.  I work with two different agencies.  One is Nisika an agency that work with families in the Ministry of Children.  I also work in a Neighbourhood House working with young mothers who could use some guidance and support parenting.  I support this petition one hundred percent and feel that you are correct.  By sweeping these horrific events under that table we are committing a serious crime of miseducating and silence.  Good luck with this petition.  Ashley Miller  3026 Carroll St.   Victoria BC
121.                Lily Chin, U of S employee, Saskatoon.  I am

In fact I now check carefully upon
                   entering any public washrooms.

We, students, family, friends, and the community of those who attend the U of S, demand an external review of security on campus. We feel that we have a right to be informed of crime on campus, including sexual assault. We do not believe that the U of S Security Services is fully sharing its knowledge of campus crimes. Without accurate
information, we have a false sense of security and we are more vulnerable to crime. You - the U of S administrators - must realize that this campus is here for people who seek knowledge. You need to take these suggestions seriously and adopt better methods of protection. You must realize your human bodies are running this campus by tuition fees, and thus we deserve knowledge. Knowledge is power ? AND in this case, safety.

553.                 Lynda King, Tisdale, SK  I was attending the U of S
when Larry Fisher (who has been
                       convicted of raping and murdering
                       Gail Miller)was raping women in
Saskatoon, some on or near the U of
S campus.  I certainly would not
have been walking home through the
park on Colony St if I had been
aware of that. I know we should
                    always be careful but judging
by events over the past Christmas
                    period, the USA  government has
                    demonstrated the importance of
                      heightened awareness when information
is available that would suggest an
                      increase in danger.  I don't
understand the reluctance of the U of
                      S to follow suit.
554.                Kathie Nordstrom, Whelan Bay, Sask. I too, cannot
understand the lack of willingness of U
of S authorities to inform all who
PATRONIZE the campus or those who visit
the campus of sexual assaults which
occur there.  What kind of a way of
thinking is this?   A young woman I
care about attends the University and I
certainly hope that such a thing never
happens to her.  Everyone needs to be
aware of possible danger to themselves so
that they can take precautions when
                necessary.
555.                Rachael Sandberg, Saskatoon,sk,  student...never seen
                   u of s security ever,,,i don't even
know what they look like.  this must
be considered a real problem.  if u
of s admin continues to ignore it , it
tells me that they feel noresponsibility
to at least 1⁄2 of their paying students.
                 it screams of sexual discrimination.

561.       Miss.Jaye -  I do believe that something should be done about this!

The U of S is a very big and busy place and like a job they

do not do  security checks on people who go there. I being

a woman and not going to school  there,(but have gone to

meet friends) have felt very uncomfortable going to the

bathrooms by myself.  Even the parking lots with there 1

emergeny phone in the middle of nowhere.  I feel the U of S

is by far a dangerous place to be for women. If you are not

going to beef up the security at least have some kind of self

defence classes that people can go to (FREE) so that they can

at least feel a little bit safer!

Thinking that and trying to ignore the problem only makes the University look part of the problem when they're in a position to change things. If they're worried about sales, then do something about an act that burdens half of the population. Wouldn't we be more likely to enroll if we knew that measures were in place? All institutions have this problem, but not all behave so ridiculously.
619.  Catherine Delaney, Saskatoon, SK. When I am on campus, I no longer feel safe   going to the bathroom alone. I will not venture onto campus unaccompanied after hours. Clearly this is unacceptable. When female students look back on their years at the U of S, do we really want feelings of FEAR to be among their most salient memories?
620.   Debra Woods, Saskatoon, SK. I refuse to be intimidated and limit my access to campus. Many other women feel the same way. What is the alternative?  To arm ourselves. Yes, I attend university at the UofS and have to carry my keys outward between my knuckles.  It provides me with a false sense of security, but at least I don't feel completely defenseless. What other choice do I have? I see campus police every time I am on campus. I see the telephones the UofS has installed on its grounds. I know that the USSU has a nightwalk program where we can be accompanied to our vehicles etc. It scares me to no end the limitless places on campus where a perpetrator can corner his victim in exitless areas (bathrooms, classrooms, computer rooms, parking lots etc). How can campus police possibly protect all areas of campus at all times?  But yes, please inform us where attacks have occurred so we can avoid the areas. Provide self-defense classes free of charge. and Educate, educate educate.  Promote zero-tolerance for abuse and assault.

buildings. As step 1, there should be a security person patrolling inside each building after 5:00 pm and weekends.

716.        Keith Brunt, Kingston, ON, U of S Alumnus, Physiology.  This goes farther back than most people know.  In my second year undergrad (1999-2000) a close friend of mine was sexually assaulted at gun-point, on campus, just outside of her residence.  She was lucky. . . she lived, how long till someone doesn't?  Currently, as a Queen's University Graduate student ALL students at Queen's receive next-day notification of any violent (including sexual) crimes committed in or around our campus.  They also send out posts regarding suspicious behaviour, with descriptions of suspects if they are at all concerned. This last semester I recieved three such e-mails.    They also maintain a web-posting of crime activity on campus.  It did not create undo fear-it, it created awareness.  We live in a world that has evil in it, and we must gaurd ourselves against it.  I cannot describe the fear I share for my friends and loved ones currently attending the U of S and living in Saskatoon given the RAPID RISE in Sexual Assault and Violence seen in the recent years.  These are not isolated incidents.  They are not new!! And they are a good indication that the so called "Campus Security" at the U of S is nothing more than a glorified meter-maid service.  Law enforcement, without force IS NOTHING!!!  The U of S Campus "Security" carry no-weapons, not a gun, not pepper-spray; nothing!!  Therefore, they cannot  respond to a violent crime if they wanted to. I demand that they provide security, and that they enforce it by patroling and policing the campus armed and trained appropriately.  If they cannot, or will not, the City Police and the U of S must come to a better agreement for the patroling of my beloved U of S campus.

       of S Saskatoon

727.   Berni Heimbecker, S'toon, SK. Reiki Master/Teacher

728.    Dani Gibson, Social Worker, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. My son is a student at the U. of S. I was assaulted on campus in the 1980's and it doesn't sound

like things have improved. U. of Calgary has a safe walk program and security in every building in the form of alarms linked to Campus Security. Safe Walk means any student leaving a building for their vehicle or another

building can request an escort from campus security. My recommendation is that if a further request of the U of S administration brings no immediate plans for an external review then this petition be reported in the Star

Pheonix along with the reluctance of the University to take the initiative to protect it's students. Providing information about such assaults is only one step. This still leaves it up to students to find safe ways of getting

around on campus. There needs to be more. Failure to act in the best interests of the students is reprehensible and inhumane not to mention unethical. Where are their priorities???

729.        Debbie Eggerman- Saskatoon
730.     Sherry Little, Government Employee, Regina, SK

731.     Dianne Allen, Regina Sask.  Social worker treating sexual offenders.

When I was at University, the U of R notified us when there were rapes on campus, and meetings were held to see what could be done.  Women could call and someone would escort them to their car (engineering students), as often

studying late at night.  We had a Womens Centre on Campus that was very involved.  Very irresponsible of the University of Saskatchewan, as how they handle these situations could impact their enrollment.  They should be

contacting other Canadian Universities to see how other institutions have handled sexual assaults on campus.  All students have a right to be informed, and I would worry about the U of S being sued for negligence if they were aware of this situation and failed to notify students of the risks.
